FALL RIVER YMCA

HISTORICAL HIGHLIGHTS

 

The YMCA of Greater Fall River was founded in 1857, at which time Robert Remington and six other associates adopted a constitution, and incorporated in 1888.  The facility used as the YMCA was located at 92 North Main Street next to the present Fall River Library.

 

1887 The Association was reorganized to include a Board of Directors and Officers.

1888 The Association was officially incorporated in November.

1895 Total membership was 480 men and boys. Space was very limited. The lot on the corner of Pine and North Main Street was purchased.

1898 The new building officially opened with a Physical Department consisting of instruction, physical exams, exercise prescription, locker facilities, shower and bathing facilities, and three bowling alleys.

1899 A handball court was added to the gymnasium. Total members were 559. Expansion of the building was proposed.

1900 In April, affluent businessmen and families of Fall River were solicited for donations to the building expansion project. Mrs. R.S. Remington, family of the originator, contributed $10,000.00. The Misses Emma and Lizzie Borden contributed $2,000.00 each. A campaign appealing to the general public for the expansion project had raised $50,000.00 by November.

1911 An addition of two stories was completed. It included additional boarding rooms to bring the total to 58 rooms to rent.

1926 In March, girls and young women were permitted to use the facilities one day per week.

1935 Summer Day Camp was started.

1936 Two squash courts were constructed, plus more dormitory rooms on the third floor. Membership dues, which had been$10.00 since 1898, were raised to $15.00 per year.

1945 302 discharged veterans of WWII were given three free months of membership.

1948 Females were admitted with membership privileges.

1949 In April, land was leased from the Commonwealth of Mass. for use for Summer Day Camp. The land, adjacent to Freetown State Forest, was leased for five years.

1957 Extensive renovations included the construction of the Business Men’s Club, a Ladies Locker Room, the removal of the running track and laying of a new gym floor, and the relocation of the Weight Room from the second floor gym balcony to an area near the present facility.

1963 In April, a Capital Fund Campaign was kicked off to raise money for a new pool, women’s locker room, and additional repairs and renovations.

1964 The new swimming pool was opened.

1975 Additional programming geared towards senior citizens began.

1978 The pool was dedicated to George Delano, past president of the Fall River YMCA.

1979 First Female Executive Director was hired.

1982 The Nautilus Fitness Center opened in September. Off-site fitness classes of Aerobic Dance and Lifefit were held in Westport, Somerset and Tiverton.

1985 The first Annual Hike for Life was held in October.

1985 The School Age Child Care program began.

1988 The 100th Anniversary of the Association was celebrated and Dr. and Mrs. Phillip Smith were honored for their many years of volunteer work with the YMCA Swim Team. The third and fourth floors were entirely renovated as a new Child Care/Exercise Center and Old Colony YMCA Diagnostic and Assessment Residential Program.

1989 In January the Cardio-Fitness Center opened. The Weight Room was renovated.

1990 The Grants Project for pool improvements began.

1990 The squash courts were renovated. The Senior Citizen off-site program began in April.

1991 The first Annual Sustaining Campaign raised $17,000.00. The heating system was converted from oil to gas.

1994 The new Teen Center (Leadership Opportunities for Teens) was opened. Women’s Locker Rooms underwent major renovations.

1996 Off-Site School Age Child Care Program began.

1997 Paul and Phyllis Fireman Charitable Foundation awards 3 year $250,000 Grant for Girls Action Program.

1998 Collaboration with Atlantis Charter School - Child Care and Swimming Lessons.

2001 Power-Up Computer Lab initiative at the YMCA

2004 Collaboration with YMCA Southcoast

2005 YMCA of Greater Fall River merged with YMCA Southcoast and was renamed the Fall River YMCA.
